Professor of Cinema Studies and Associate Dean of the Faculty of Humanities at Stockholm University. Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Aesthetics & Culture.

Received a PhD in Cinema Studies at Stockholm University in 1992 with a dissertation on Andrei Tarkovsky. Publications include Gränsbilder. Det dolda rummet hos Tarkovskij (1992), Sätt att se. Texter om estetik och film (ed., 1994), Blick och blindhet (1997), Stumfilm i brytningstid (1998), Nordic National Cinemas (with Tytti Soila and Gunnar Iversen, 1998), Moving Images: From Edison to the Webcam (co-edited with John Fullerton, 2000), Konst som rörlig bild (ed., 2006), A History of Swedish Experimental Film Culture (with LG Andersson and John Sundholm, 2010).

Member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities. Chair of the Ingmar Bergman Foundation and of the Centre for Fashion Studies, Stockholm University. Board member of the Swedish Fulbright Commission, of King Gustaf VI Adolf's Fund for Swedish Culture and of the Filmform Foundation. Contributor on film and television to national daily Svenska Dagbladet.
