The primary aim of this study is to describe, analyse and discuss how school competition, images of symbolic capital and parents? choice strategies shape social organization of a local school market in Sweden. By social organization I mean the hierarchical order established in the local school market between its major actors (schools, parents, students and citizens), something that gradually clearly defines the actors? positions, aspirations and possibilities within the framework of education. My ambition is to, by using a variety of methodological approaches and material sources, analyses of policy document, statistics, local curricula, interviews and participant observations, analyse the practical operations and outcomes of this local school market. The overall theoretical frame of reference is provided by Bourdieus constructive sociology and some of its main concepts such as field, positions, relations, strategy, habitus, capital, symbolic violence and recognition/misrecognition. Furthermore I intend theoretically, methodologically and analytically connecting my study to the work of Stephen Ball and Diana Reay.
