This research program addresses questions concerning the solutions students choose regarding environmental challenges and climate change and the role of knowledge and values of such choices. Previous research in the field of education, environmental education, and educational psychology, has focussed on the natural sciences exclusively; often assuming that learning about environmental problems is a straightforward process where individuals take action based on scientific understanding.

The focus of the program is centred on learning in the social sciences, particularly addressing students’ learning in the disciplines of political science, economics and law. The rationales for selecting these subjects are:

1. They are the largest professional educational programs within the faculty of social science.

2. Students in these subjects will hold professional occupations that all deal with environmental problems (governmental, financial, jurisdictional institutions, business, and politics).

The program aim to generate insights on students’ learning, the values they develop and their decisions on means for solving the problem of climate change. The program will contribute to theoretical advancement the ways that knowledge and values influence choices of action, and of teaching and learning in the social sciences and ways for improving teaching practices.
