Bacterial membrane proteins mediate a plethora of essential chemical reactions. For example, they sense and control the uptake of nutrients, they harvest energy, and they secrete toxins. For all of these processes, membrane proteins must assemble into complexes (or machines). The studies proposed in this application aim to understand how membrane proteins assemble into complexes. This knowledge will give insight into how bacterial membrane proteins function and how they are regulated. If we understand these processes, we can begin to manipulate bacterial membrane proteins for human health and disease.
