Description

The aim of the project is to develop novel biosensor concepts based on advanced molecular probing and signal amplification schemes. We collaborate with engineering groups to develop dedicated devices tailored for the molecular reactions. Furthermore, we collaborate with a large number of researchers in biomedicine and clinical diagnostics to apply the techniques in fundamental research investigations and to evaluate their performance in clinical practice, respectively. The techniques offer single-molecule sensitivity due to the exquisite specificity of the molecular probing reactions coupled to highly specific signal amplification. They are multiplexable and can be configure to offer digital quantification. We are currently implementing one of the biosensor approaches in a bio-security application, funded by the Swedish Defense. Other important applications are in infectious diagnostics in medicine and food production. Ultimately, these rapid, specific and sensitive biosensor approaches could be implemented for diagnostic challenges such as point-of-care analysis. Improved molecular diagnostics impact society by aiding in disease prevention and by guiding therapy, resulting in improved quality of life. The techniques could offer commercial opportunities for Swedish diagnostic and biotechnology industry. Improved biosensors will also promote development of new diagnostic biomarkers, and facilitate drug development in academia and pharmaceutical industry.
