Description

The demand for literacy has increased considerably over recent decades. This affects the individual in society as well as in working life. Deficits of literacy have become a severe disability in modern society. Thus literacy has become an important aspect of democracy. The conditions for reading and writing in society and working life are relatively unexplored and yet we know that most kinds of activities today include reading and writing. There is a growing interest in these matters from different lines of research. However the research has so far mainly dealt with the demands of literacy in school. Although we also know some about literacy among grown ups in general, we know less about the ways literacy manifests itself in real situations in society and working life. Also the research is carried out within many different disciplines and the researchers need to meet to be able to create a joint conception. In view of this we want to establish a new network of researchers from different disciplines. We started by inviting around 40 researchers to a conference in Stockholm last autumn. 13 of these met again in January for a first planning meeting to form a network. Our ambition is to meet twice a year for one or two days each time. Every meeting will have a theme and we will invite visiting lecturers. Thus we hope to create a melting pot where researchers from different disciplines can meet to enrich literacy research, focusing on reading and writing in adult society.
