Description

We will design, synthesize and characterize new functional porous crystalline materials. The structures will be built from molecular building units, the "LEGO blocks". We will use inorganic, metal-organic and organic molecules as the "LEGO blocks" to build open framework structures according to desired topologies based on reticular chemistry. The concept of scale chemistry will be adapted to build frameworks with extra-large pores. I will study the matching principles between different building blocks and the crystal growth mechanism in order to find optimal synthesis conditions. The crystal growth mechanisms and crystal structures of these new materials will be studied by electron microscopy, single crystal and powder X-ray diffraction, solid state NMR, IR-FT, theoretical modelling and other techniques. The materials are expected to have potential applications in heterogeneous catalysis, gas or molecular separation, gas storage and sensors.
