Optics and photonics provide key technologies in applications ranging from aviation to xerography, and will continue to do so in the future. The road ahead lays in bridging skills in material and device fabrication with new insights, in particular regarding nano-scale (near-field) optics and quantum phenomena. Therefore, we will focus the center research on the four research areas: Functional optical materials, Nanooptical devices, Quantum information and communication, and Near-field optics. Each of these areas will have significant impact on our fundamental understanding of electromagnetic radiation and its interaction with matter, and on future applications of optics and photonics. Optics and photonics has traditionally been a strong research area at KTH. Subsequently, the center proposal “Advanced Optics and Photonics” describes one of the prioritized research areas at KTH, having excellent laboratory and computational facilities. This center proposal aims to facilitate the coordination of the research and graduate education in this large cluster of complementary capabilities, in order to create new knowledge and develop of technologies beyond state-of-the-art. The research environment consists of researchers from the Dept. of Microelectronics and Applied Physics, the Dept. of Applied Physics, and Fysikum at Stockholms Universitet. To our help we have the Electrum Laboratory at Kista and the Nano Fabrication Laboratory at Albanova, both state of the art facilities.
