The primary subject of the present project is the experimental investigation of the process of mutual neutralization in which a negative atomic or molecular ion donates its excess electron to an initially positively charged ion. The experimental method of choice for the investigation of this proces is that of merged beams of oppositely charged ions in well-defined internal energy states as this configuration allows for detailed control of all intra- and inter-molecular degrees of freedom. With the DESIREE double electrostatic ion storage ring this appealing scenario will be realized for the first time, and it is a privilege of the undersigned to be involved in this project and hence able to benefit from the world-unique experimental conditions that will be offered. The planned mutual neutralization experiments differ in level of complexity of the consituents from positive and negative atomic hydrogen ions to interacting large biomolecular ions as e.g. poly-peptides. The scientific foci of the different investigations discussed here are within the areas of fundamental few-body quantum physics, interstellar ion chemistry and biophysics.
