The starting point for this project is, first, that there is room for improved standards in how social researchers access and utilise occupational information resources. Second, that the empirically grounded analysis of occupational positions is a fruitful area for further sociological research. This project aims to (1) further develop and enhance an internet based data resource - the ‘Occupational Information Depository’ (OID), and (2) conduct a series of research studies concerning occupational data and social stratification. The OID purports to systematically organize a growing amount of occupational information, and make it accessible to the research community. OID offers a user-friendly information resource, where information about occupations across time and countries can be easily accessed. The second part of the project involves a series of research studies which all relate to the use of occupational data in social stratification research. These studies involve exercises in analysing occupational information resources across countries, time periods and between women and men. They would utilise the OID’s resources extensively, and provide an ideal testing ground for the robustness of the OID’s provisions in practical settings. They would thus assist in the progressive development and exploitation of the OID’s services. Moreover, they are designed in order to make a substantial contribution to occupationally based social stratification research.
