It is proposed to study the feasibility of the certification of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in fish and sediment, organochlorine pesticides in fish and polyaromatic hydrocarbons in mussels. The availability of certified reference materials (CRMs) could lead to a better analytical performance and a better risk assessment of these compounds with regard to consumer protection. The project provides information on sampling and preparation of the planned CRMs, homogeneity, and stability studies of the test materials, and a mini-workshop to instruct participants on appropriate techniques. An interlaboratory study will be organized of which results should be the basis for a future successful certification of the CRMs. A final report with conclusions and recommendations will be made as well as a Technological Implementation Plan in which the strategy for production, certification and marketing of the candidate CRMs is described.
