The history of the Swedish Level of Living Survey (LNU) is one of pioneering, tradition and renewal. The five completed surveys (1968-2000) form an unusually rich individual-level database, with a combination of prospective and retrospective longitudinal design. The basic research questions have concerned changes in the level of living, the distribution of welfare, and understanding individual life-course trajectories. We apply for a VR grant to plan the following improvements and changes for a sixth wave of LNU in 2010. 1) Extensions of the survey sample: By adding i) a sample of foreign born adults and an additional sample of adults born in Sweden with foreign born parents, and ii) by the inclusion of previous Child-LNU 2000 respondents in the main sample of LNU2010. 2) Linking LNU to other data sets: By adding new questions or revising old questions in the LNU questionnaire(s). This would strengthen the comparative potential of LNU and thereby further widen its field of application. 3) Change of method for data collection: Evaluate consequences of a change from face-to-face interviews to telephone interviews. Caution is needed not to hazard data quality and the continuation of data time series. 4) Federated data bases: Investigate, together with VR, the possibility to use LNU2010 as a pilot for a new type of data base combining survey data with register data from several sources. Several technical and legal questions must be considered before this is possible.
