Description

We apply for funds in order to document and make the database “Your Country and Your Life” available for the research society. The database was created and continuously developed by FSI (Forskargruppen för Samhälls- och Informationsstudier), a private company owned by Torsten Österman. Briefly before his death, Torsten Österman donated the database to the Department of Sociology, Stockholm University where he got his Ph.D. and periodically worked. The deal includes that FSI continuously provides the department with new data. This database contains one of the most comprehensive series of surveys in the world with respect to its contents (more than 2000 variables) and the range of time (1955-2002). Identical indicators can be followed for decades, and they cover a wide range of subject areas, often using a battery of in-depth questions. Although the database is unique and potentially of great use in social science, extensive work is required in order to document variables, codes, information of data collection, important time-series, etc, and to convert data to a user-friendly format. If this is not done the database is for all practical purposes useless, except for those that are getting help from FSI personnel. A grant seems necessary to avoid the risk that the data material partly or fully will be lost.
