This research project focuses on middle managers in social work with everyday responsibility for child protection, social assistance and treatment of substance abusers. While middle managers have a key role in municipal social work, their importance for these professional bureaucracies is not at all researched. The aim of this project is to analyze the organisational conditions and the everyday content of social work management. The analysis will focus on connections between everyday conditions for management, its organisational base and the strategies of middle managers towards different organisational levels within the organization and its environment. Important parts of the project is to scrutinize in what manner middle managers roles and strategies are related to factors within the organisation and profession and how they handle new ideas and other types of influence from the environment. The project is founded on a broad empirical base including: (1) qualitative interviews with middle managers and, (2) the managers will also be asked to keep diaries on their everyday activities, (3) a questionnaire distributed to representative sampl of managers, (4) focus groups with managers in 5 to 6 agencies. On the basis of this broad empirical foundation, the plan is to broaden the theoretical understanding of middle managers role in professional bureaucracies and to contribute to the knowledge of organisational structures and management in social work.
