The present research proposal concerns random network models, both static and time dynamic, in communities (of nodes/individuals) having certain predefined local structures (e.g. degree distribution, clustering or degree correlation) but potentially also known heterogeneities such as different types of individuals and/or local cliques (e.g. households). Suitable models will be defined and large population global results will be derived. For example: Will a giant component exist, and if so, how large will it be? An application which will be addressed is what happens if an infectious disease spreads on the network. Can a major outbreak occur and how large will it be?, or, in the time-dynamic case: May the disease become endemic and if so at what level? Another question which will be addressed is what effect preventive measures (e.g. vaccinating a certain fraction of the community) may have on reducing the spread. In terms of the random network the disease spread corresponds to thinning edges in the network whereas vaccination corresponds to thinning of nodes. A related problem which will be addressed is to model and analyse the spread of a disease in which the disease agent itself evolves according to some evolutionary model and to see what effect these different strains of a disease may have on the disease spread.
