Description

Investigation of extreme atomic conditions with highly charged ions is a research field addressed at the new Stockholm Electron Beam Ion Trap (S-EBIT) at AlbaNova. These studies are needed for our understanding of the processes ongoing in hot plasma and cosmological environments. New physical phenomena, new insight into our understanding of the atomic structure, fundamental symmetries, and details of quantum dynamics of atoms can also be expected. In addition there are interesting technological applications of highly charged ions. We propose therefore the following four subjects of research at S-EBIT. 1. Characterization of nano-capillaries to form self-organizing guiding systems for highly-charged ions with the aim of nm-size beam focussing; 2. Recombination and excitation studies for astrophysical and fusion plasma, revealing the missing baryonic mass in the universe, and fundamental issues; 3. Tests of QED in strong fields, relativistic many-body effects, and nuclear effects in heavy ions; 4. Precision mass measurements for fundamental physics problems using extremely highly charged ions to exploit their charge for high accuracy in atomic masses.
