Description

This project intends to investigate issues in three areas of string theory. These issues are relevant both to better understanding the the theory as well as to its application to our understanding of the physical world. On the more formal side, the issue under investigation is the structure of theory of scalar and vector fields that live on extended objects called D-branes. The aim is to uncover the systematics of the theory leading to a geometric description. The second issue deals with understanding the propagation of strings in background fields, including time-dependent ones. This is expected to help us better understand the very early stages of the evolution of our Universe. The third issue under investigation is some aspects of field theory, inspired by string theory, which is expected to be relevant to understanding some issues in cosmology. An expanded description of these points will be found in Appendix A (the last two areas being closely related, will be described under a single heading).
