Is There Life Over There ?
The Representations of Cemeteries and Burial Sites in Modern Arabic Fiction

Project leader

Cemeteries and burial sites as spaces are usually related to death. But they may also refer to life in some contexts. My project aims to study the various representations of cemeteries and burial sites in a selection of works in Modern Arabic fiction, in which these places stand for inverted values compared with what they commonly represent: death, finiteness, nothingness… among other things. In other words, the study explores the idea of life through death. It is is based on both narratological and socio-anthropological approaches.
