Description

This PhD project investigates aspects of the language comprehension and production process and whether these aspects are reflected in usage frequencies within and between languages. The project focuses on the comprehension process of "core constituents" of the clause, the arguments and the predicate, and the process by which a listener determine the semantic relations between arguments and predicate. Morphosyntactic, phonological, semantic as well as pragramtic cues are availible to the listener during this process. By conducting experimental and corpusbased studies, the project investigates if there exists a correspondance between, on the one hand, the strength of these cues during the comprehension process, and, on the other, their availability in language usage within a specific language.
