This application concerns the publication of a monograph presenting results from Fia Sundevall’s FORTE-funded project "Heteronormativity in the Swedish Armed Forces: it’s manifestations, duration and implications 1900–2010" (project no. 2012–0934) as well as some of the results from Fia Sundevall’s and Alma Persson's joint pilot study "LGBT in the Swedish Armed Forces: continuity and change " (funded by KvA). The book deals with issues of inclusion and exclusion based on sexuality and gender identity in one of Sweden’s largest state employers: the Armed Forces. Formal regulations as well as norms and practices are explored, based on extensive source material including archival documents, interviews, and surveys. The book is the first to take a contemporary historical approach to LGBT policies and practices within the Swedish Armed Forces. Through its historical approach to LGBT developments in the military, it provides a better understanding of the contemporary challenges of diversity work in state agencies in general and the Armed Forces in particular. By addressing issues of power, gender and sexuality in the Swedish Armed Forces, its continuities and discontinuities over time, the book brings together several fields of research, most importantly contemporary studies into the history of working life and discrimination, studies of gender and sexuality, and military history. Furthermore, it explores a ground of discrimination that has not been studied in Swedish labour history, and an aspect of Swedish military history that have not previously been the subject of empirical research.
