The conference "Hinduism in Europe" is planned to take place at Stockholm University, on April 26-28, 2017. It is organised by the department of Ethnology, Gender Studies, and History of Religion. The three days conference has a regional specialisation towards Europe and attempts at presenting an extensive overview of various aspects of living Hinduism. Hindus in Sweden are estimated to be about 11 000 and in Europe between 2 and 3 million, making Hindus one of Europe's large religious minorities. The religious encounter with the religious traditions that today are identified as Hindu goes back to antiquity. The conference will analyse that encounter history, and explore colonialism, the development of Indology, European intellectual traditions, yoga, and migration history with a special focus on the contemporary period. It will cover both overarching themes related to Hinduism and the history of the multitude of Hindu traditions in the various countries of Europe. Studies of Hinduism in Europe are scarce and have been overshadowed by studies of Islam and Christianity. Hindu minorities in Europe are on the rise, and Hindus today struggle with issues of integration, identity, and practice. The conference aims to understand the many challenges that Hindus face today in Europe, but also the ways Hindus have succeeded in developing new strategies of accomodation.
