Description

This project focus on new femininities and masculinities in rural areas. The hypothesis is that the changing gender relations can be understood as new forms of femininities and masculinities and a re-negotiated gender contract. We interpret the spatial as conditions formed by social and material restrictions. QUESTIONS: To what extent do spatial conditions affect gender contracts in rural areas in Sweden? In what ways are gender relations reproduced and transformed? To what extent do regional programmes, EU:s Structural Funds and Leader+, take part in transforming or reproducing rural gender relations? Our intention is to map and analyse constructions and transformations of male and female, and their implications for every-day life in rural environments. Individuals and groups of individuals shape the place specific masculinities and femininities using certain characteristics and expressions. PERSPECTIVES: The discursive perspective: How are the connections between (rural) space and gender expressed? The realist perspective: To what extent is there a transformation of hegemonic masculinity and an emphasised femininity in rural areas? The evaluative perspective: Which are the consequences for gender contracts in rural areas? METHODS: Narratives of places including interviews, observations and focus groups. Discourse analysis: Mapping existing norms and important channels Statistical analysis: Mapping and analysing statistical data.
